• About Me

I’m an opinionated Grumpy Old Man. I enjoy the intellectual give and take that goes along with that, but have very little patience for stupid people (Note: there is a big difference between “stupid” and “educated”. Some of the stupidest people I’ve ever met have a PhD…). Beside arguing, I like to build things in almost any media. Right now I’m mostly building in wood, Lego, and a bunch of different electronic media. I teach in a number of different venues - from preschool all the way through graduate school. Subjects range from talmud to neuroscience to engineering.

For fun, I like to bash people with swords (OK, so they’re made of foam. It’s still fun). Although I spend a lot of my time in a wheelchair, I manage to keep pretty active (Like bashing people with swords). I am a libertarian, and have a hard time finding anything good to say about government or politicians. OK, politicians might make good sausage, but that's about as good as it gets.

Monday Manifest: Summer

Well, we’ve passed the start of summer (the longest day of the year), so I guess its time to do a manifest about summer. Here we go:

  • Summer vacation. Because most of the volunteer work I do is in schools, summer vacation means lots of time to do other things – or nothing. This is Good
  • Sitting in a lawn chair with a nice campfire going listening to the sounds of the surrounding woods and fields. One of my favorite ways to spend a summer day/evening.
  • Black flies, mosquitoes, ticks, and other nasty little biting insects. Noah screwed up when he didn’t take advantage of his position to wipe out at least mosquitoes and black flies. (yes, there are inconveniences in the summer)
  • Poking around in the garden. Some folks don’t like weeding, but to me a nice quiet afternoon spent picking weeds out of the peas is relaxing.
  • Minimalist clothing. I’m not talking about fall-out-of-it halter tops or butt-floss bathing suits. Comfortable shorts, a T shirt, and bare feet has got to be the greatest wardrobe in the world. Makes for quick laundry too.
  • Open windows and breezes. I’m not an Air conditioning person. Open windows, fresh air and the sounds of the birds.
  • Sun. Yep, I said it. I like sitting in the sun soaking up the rays. It feels good. I’m tan and I don’t hve any guilt about it. Stop worrying about skin cancer and go enjoy a summer day for a change.
  • Fresh picked vegetables from the garden. Nothing compares to reaching out and picking something, and munching it right there in the garden.
  • Thunderstorms. Big ones. Huge black clouds blowing in from nowhere, torrential downpours, bright flashes and chest-rumbling thunder. Best if you are caught outside on a  100 degree day. A sudden drenching followed by the return of the sun feels great.
  • Rainbows. If you can look at a rainbow without getting a nice warm feeling inside, it’s time to start pricing coffins. Nuff said.
  • Summer camp. Its great for the kids to go off to summer camp and learn to live away from home. It sucks that they are away though. Like most things in parenting, this one is two-sided…..

So there ya go. A quick survey of what summer means to me. Now turn off the computer and get outside!
