• About Me

I’m an opinionated Grumpy Old Man. I enjoy the intellectual give and take that goes along with that, but have very little patience for stupid people (Note: there is a big difference between “stupid” and “educated”. Some of the stupidest people I’ve ever met have a PhD…). Beside arguing, I like to build things in almost any media. Right now I’m mostly building in wood, Lego, and a bunch of different electronic media. I teach in a number of different venues - from preschool all the way through graduate school. Subjects range from talmud to neuroscience to engineering.

For fun, I like to bash people with swords (OK, so they’re made of foam. It’s still fun). Although I spend a lot of my time in a wheelchair, I manage to keep pretty active (Like bashing people with swords). I am a libertarian, and have a hard time finding anything good to say about government or politicians. OK, politicians might make good sausage, but that's about as good as it gets.

Too quiet OR: Where are the Kids

Well, it has been a week without kids, school or classes. In other words, summer vacation. Time to relax, play around in the garden, do some yard work, and blog.

Oh yeah, and the pic? I was looking for a cartoony clock, and when I ran into this one I couldn’t help laughing – the whole biological clock thing is kind of meaningless when a 60 year old woman can pump out a set of triplets……

Anyway, So why is it so darn quiet? Yes, we’re dealing with the first real hot weather of the year (High 90’s), and the dog would rather lay around on the cellar floor than do anything, But why so darn quiet? OK, so lets start out with a recap of the week. Besides the normal physical therapy type things, this week I have: weeded the garden once, watered the garden every day (once with the sprinkler, the rest by hand), cut down three trees, and turned them into firewood sized logs (Not easy to do if you can’t stand up), weeded another garden, mowed the lawn (after replacing a flat tire on the tractor), had three small bonfires, and spent way too much time blogging.

hammock12.jpgIf this was a normal summer, the above list would have taken me until late August to complete. So what’s going on? Well, the Small One is with her mom and the other kids are away at camp. All of the kids that I normal teach/tutor/train and otherwise indoctrinate are on summer vacation. Suddenly, the house is empty. The other day, I logged on to the ‘puter (as usual), augered in to some work, and when I looked up it was night! I spent an entire day in front of the ‘puter – without the interruptions and scheduled sessions, the day just evaporated. Granted, I got a ton of work done, but that doesn’t really count for much – there’s always more waiting to be done.

I can recall when I would have relished the chance to have a whole day of quiet me time. Now, it just seems weird. Sigh. The small one will be back in a week but the other 2/3s of the clan won’t be back for another 6 weeks. Guess I’d better get used to the silence….
